Which grade of salt should you use?

Salt for Swimming Pool Chlorine Generators

Recent years have seen explosive growth of automatic swimming pool chlorine generators which use salt as a method of keeping swimming pool water clean and safe. They work by passing a weak electric current through pool water containing salt (sodium chloride) thereby generating sodium hypochlorite. Normally between 3kg and 5kg of salt for every 1,000 litres (220 gallons) of swimming pool volume is required. Recommended dose varies according to the equipment used so it's important that manufacturers advice is strictly followed for optimum results. Many of the equipment suppliers seem to recommend granular salt for swimming pool chlorine generators, however we suggest using Pure Dried Vacuum salt as a lower cost alternative. It's food grade, pure salt identical to that sold by grocery stores for general kitchen use, but in our 25kg bags it's much cheaper. It's much finer than granular salt and therefore quicker dissolving in the swimming pool water. We assume granular salt has been recommended in the past because it's perceived to be more widely available, but then not everyone has found the link to www.salt-supplies.co.uk.
